What is a salary hike?

A salary hike (also called an increment or raise) is the increase in your pay, usually stated as a percentage of your current CTC. In India it comes at three points: the yearly appraisal, a promotion, or a job switch. The headline percentage is only half the story, though. What matters at the end of the month is how much more reaches your bank account, and that depends on how the raise is split between basic, allowances, EPF and tax.

Salary hike formulas

Hike % = (New salary − Old salary) ÷ Old salary × 100
New salary = Old salary × (1 + Hike% ÷ 100)
Old salary from new = New salary ÷ (1 + Hike% ÷ 100)
Real hike = (1 + Hike%) ÷ (1 + Inflation%) − 1

Worked examples

  • 10% hike on ₹12 LPA: ₹12,00,000 × 1.10 = ₹13,20,000, or ₹1,10,000 a month.
  • Offer of ₹10.5 LPA against ₹8 LPA: (10.5 − 8) ÷ 8 × 100 = 31.25% hike.
  • 15% hike on ₹25,000 a month: ₹25,000 × 1.15 = ₹28,750 a month.
  • A common mistake: a 20% cut followed by a 20% hike does not get you back where you started. ₹10 lakh → ₹8 lakh → ₹9.6 lakh. Getting back to ₹10 lakh needs a 25% hike.

How much does a hike raise your in-hand salary?

A 10% CTC hike rarely means 10% more in your bank account. Here is the same 10% hike at different salary levels, on the Tax Year 2026-27 new tax regime. The figures assume basic pay is 50% of CTC, EPF is on the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, gratuity is included in CTC, and professional tax is ₹2,500:

Up to about ₹13.28 lakh CTC (₹12.75 lakh gross salary), the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the rebate up to ₹12 lakh taxable income (Section 156, formerly 87A) mean no income tax at all. So the in-hand rise can even beat the CTC hike, because EPF is capped at ₹1,800 a month. Above that, tax takes a growing share.

The ₹13 lakh zone: just above ₹12 lakh taxable income, marginal relief limits your tax to the income above ₹12 lakh, so nearly every extra rupee goes in tax until taxable income reaches about ₹12.71 lakh. With 4% cess on top, a small raise here can leave take-home slightly lower. A CTC of ₹13.5 lakh takes home about ₹1,950 a year more than ₹14 lakh. If your hike lands you here, ask for part of it as employer NPS contribution, which is tax-free up to 14% of basic under the new regime.

Average salary hike in India: 2026 and 2027

Aon's Annual Salary Increase and Turnover Survey for India 2026-27, released in October 2026, reported:

  • 9.0% average salary increase in 2026, with 9.1% projected for 2027.
  • Attrition of 18% in 2026, up from 16.2% in 2025.
  • Highest 2027 projection: NBFCs at 10.1%. Lowest: technology consulting and services at 6.6%.

These are company-wide averages. Top performers and people moving into scarce skills usually get well above the average, while an "average" rating often gets less. Promotions are typically handled separately from the annual increment.

CTC, fixed pay and variable pay: which hike counts?

ComponentIn the hike?Why it matters
Fixed pay (basic, HRA, allowances)YesThe guaranteed monthly part. Compare offers on this first.
Variable pay / performance bonusOften included in CTCNot guaranteed. A ₹1 lakh variable paid at 70% is worth ₹70,000.
Employer EPF and gratuityIncluded in CTCYour money, but locked away until withdrawal or exit (gratuity after 5 years, or 1 year for fixed-term staff).
Joining or retention bonusNoOne-time. Usually has a clawback if you leave early, and doesn't recur next year.
ESOPs / RSUsSometimes shown in CTCValue depends on vesting and share price. Taxed as a perquisite when exercised or vested.

Under the labour codes in force from 21 November 2025, wages (basic + DA + retaining allowance) must be at least 50% of total pay. Many employers restructured salaries so that basic is about half of CTC. That raises EPF and gratuity, and can lower monthly in-hand even when CTC is unchanged. Use the assumptions panel in the calculator to match your salary slip.

Real hike: is your raise beating inflation?

A hike only raises your standard of living if it beats inflation. With the RBI's 4% inflation target:

  • 9% hike → real hike of 4.81%
  • 6% hike → real hike of 1.92%
  • 5% hike with 6% inflation → real pay cut of 0.94%

How your salary grows over time

Hikes compound. At a steady yearly hike, ₹10 lakh today becomes:

Yearly hikeAfter 5 yearsAfter 10 yearsDoubles in
6%₹13.38 L₹17.91 L11.9 years
8%₹14.69 L₹21.59 L9.0 years
9%₹15.39 L₹23.67 L8.0 years
10%₹16.11 L₹25.94 L7.3 years
12%₹17.62 L₹31.06 L6.1 years

To reach ₹25 lakh from ₹10 lakh in 10 years, you need an average hike of about 9.6% a year. One well-negotiated job switch can do the work of several appraisal cycles, because every later hike is calculated on the higher base. The Future Salary tab works out the year-by-year path and the hike you need for any target.

Getting the most out of your hike

  1. Confirm the base. Is the percentage applied to CTC, fixed CTC or basic? It can make a difference of several thousand rupees a month.
  2. Check the in-hand effect before you accept, especially if the new CTC crosses ₹13 lakh.
  3. Use tax-efficient parts. Employer NPS (up to 14% of basic) is the main deduction left under the new regime.
  4. Compare offers on fixed pay, then add variable pay at a realistic payout.
  5. Think in compounding terms. 2–3% more this year raises every future increment.

Note: In-hand figures use the Tax Year 2026-27 new tax regime: slabs from ₹4 lakh, ₹75,000 standard deduction, the rebate up to ₹12 lakh (Section 156, formerly 87A) with marginal relief, and 4% cess. The salary-structure assumptions are shown above. Your payslip may differ with other allowances, employer NPS, the old regime or state professional tax.
