What is PPF?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme you can open at a post office or bank. You invest between ₹500 and ₹1.5 lakh each financial year for 15 years, and the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. The rate is set by the government every quarter; it is 7.1% for October to December 2026.
How PPF interest is calculated
Interest is worked out each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and added to the account once a year, on 31 March. If you invest once a year before 5 April, each year works out as:
Balance at year end = (opening balance + deposit) × (1 + r)
where r is the annual rate (7.1% = 0.071). Over 15 years of the same deposit D, this adds up to D × [(1 + r)15 − 1] ÷ r × (1 + r).
Worked example
₹1,50,000 invested before 5 April every year at 7.1%:
- Year 1: 1,50,000 × 0.071 = ₹10,650 interest, balance ₹1,60,650
- Year 2: (1,60,650 + 1,50,000) × 0.071 = ₹22,056 interest, balance ₹3,32,706
- After 15 years: ₹40,68,209, of which ₹22,50,000 is your money and ₹18,18,209 is tax-free interest
Why the deposit date matters
Money deposited after the 5th of a month earns no interest for that month. Investing the full year’s amount before 5 April earns the most. Spreading it as ₹12,500 each month (before the 5th) for 15 years gives ₹39,44,599, which is ₹1,23,610 less. Use “More options” in the calculator to compare.
Extending PPF after 15 years
| ₹1.5 lakh a year at 7.1% | Maturity value |
|---|---|
| 15 years | ₹40,68,209 |
| 20 years (extended once, still investing) | ₹66,58,288 |
| 25 years (extended twice, still investing) | ₹1,03,08,015 |
You can extend in blocks of 5 years as many times as you like. To keep depositing, submit Form H within one year of maturity. If you extend without deposits, you can withdraw any amount once a year and the rest keeps earning interest.
Tax on PPF
- Interest and maturity amount: tax-free in both the old and the new tax regime.
- Deposits: deductible up to ₹1.5 lakh a year under Section 80C, but only in the old tax regime. The new regime has no 80C deduction.
