πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Asphalt Quantities

Hot mix asphalt (HMA) weighs approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot, or about 2 tons per cubic yard. The standard residential driveway thickness is 2–3 inches for the surface course over a properly prepared gravel base. Commercial applications typically use 3–4 inches.

Asphalt is ordered in tons and delivered by dump truck (typically 20 tons per load). The formula is: Length Γ— Width Γ— Thickness (in feet) Γ— 145 Γ· 2000 = tons needed. Always order 5–10% extra to account for variations in subgrade and compaction.

A 20Γ—12 ft driveway at 3 inches thick = 240 Γ— 0.25 = 60 cu ft Γ— 145 lbs Γ· 2000 = 4.35 tons of hot mix asphalt. That's well under one truckload.
