π‘ How to Calculate Asphalt Quantities
Hot mix asphalt (HMA) weighs approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot, or about 2 tons per cubic yard. The standard residential driveway thickness is 2β3 inches for the surface course over a properly prepared gravel base. Commercial applications typically use 3β4 inches.
Asphalt is ordered in tons and delivered by dump truck (typically 20 tons per load). The formula is: Length Γ Width Γ Thickness (in feet) Γ 145 Γ· 2000 = tons needed. Always order 5β10% extra to account for variations in subgrade and compaction.
A 20Γ12 ft driveway at 3 inches thick = 240 Γ 0.25 = 60 cu ft Γ 145 lbs Γ· 2000 = 4.35 tons of hot mix asphalt. That's well under one truckload.
