💡 How to Calculate Square Footage

Square footage is area measured in feet — specifically, the number of 1-foot × 1-foot squares that fit inside a space. The universal formula is Length × Width = Square Feet. If your measurements are in inches, divide both by 12 before multiplying. For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles, calculate each section, and add the totals.

This calculator supports rectangles, squares, triangles, circles, trapezoids, and rectangular borders. You can enter measurements in feet and inches, add a material waste factor, and get an instant cost estimate using price per square foot, square yard, or square meter.

For volume projects using square footage as a base, use our cubic yards calculator. For tile projects, try our tile calculator. For flooring quantities, see our flooring calculator.

Area Formulas for Every Shape

Rectangle or Square

Area = Length × Width

For a square, since all sides are equal: Area = Side². The most common formula for floors, walls, yards, and any flat rectangular surface.

Example: A rectangular living room 15 ft × 18 ft = 270 sq ft

Triangle

Area = ½ × Base × Height

The height must be perpendicular to the base. Use this for triangular garden beds, gable walls, or bump-out additions. For a triangle where you know only the three side lengths, use Heron's Formula — the calculator handles this automatically.

Example: A triangular deck extension with a 12-ft base and 8-ft height: ½ × 12 × 8 = 48 sq ft

Circle

Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² (where π ≈ 3.14159)

Enter the diameter — the full width of the circle. The calculator divides by 2 for you to get the radius before applying the formula.

Example: A circular patio 14 ft in diameter (radius = 7 ft): π × 7² = 3.14159 × 49 = 153.9 sq ft

Trapezoid

Area = [(a + b) ÷ 2] × Height

Where a and b are the two parallel sides and height is the perpendicular distance between them. Cathedral ceiling walls and rooms with one angled wall typically follow this shape.

Example: A trapezoidal yard with parallel sides of 30 ft and 40 ft, height 20 ft: [(30+40) ÷ 2] × 20 = 35 × 20 = 700 sq ft

Rectangular Border (Frame)

Used to calculate the area of a frame or border around a pool, garden bed, or tile surround — where you need to tile or pave the surrounding area, but not the center.

Formula: Border Area = Total Outer Area − Inner Area

Example: A 10×8 ft garden bed with a 2-ft stone border: Total = (14×12) = 168 sq ft. Inner = 10×8 = 80 sq ft. Border = 88 sq ft

Unit Conversion Reference Table

Once you have your square footage, convert to other units using these exact factors:

FromToMultiply ByExample
Square feet (ft²)Square inches (in²)× 144100 sq ft = 14,400 sq in
Square feet (ft²)Square yards (yd²)÷ 9180 sq ft = 20 sq yd
Square feet (ft²)Square meters (m²)× 0.09291,000 sq ft = 92.9 m²
Square feet (ft²)Acres× 0.000023043,560 sq ft = 1 acre
Square meters (m²)Square feet (ft²)× 10.764100 m² = 1,076 sq ft
Square yards (yd²)Square feet (ft²)× 920 sq yd = 180 sq ft
AcresSquare feet (ft²)× 43,5601 acre = 43,560 sq ft

Quick facts to memorize: 1 sq ft = 144 sq in · 9 sq ft = 1 sq yd · 43,560 sq ft = 1 acre · 1 sq m ≈ 10.764 sq ft

How to Measure a Room Step by Step

  1. Clear the floor: Move furniture away from walls so you can measure wall-to-wall without obstruction.
  2. Measure length and width: Extend your tape measure from wall to wall at floor level. Record both dimensions in feet and inches.
  3. Convert inches to decimal feet: Divide the inches by 12 and add to feet. Example: 12 ft 6 in = 12 + (6÷12) = 12.5 ft.
  4. Multiply: Length × Width = square footage.
  5. Handle irregular shapes: For L-shaped, T-shaped, or rooms with bump-outs, divide the space into two or more rectangles. Calculate each, then add.
  6. Add waste factor for materials: Multiply total sq ft by 1.10 for standard flooring or 1.15–1.20 for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

How to Measure an L-Shaped Room

An L-shaped room is two rectangles joined together. Divide the space by drawing an imaginary line across the corner to create Rectangle A and Rectangle B. Measure each section separately, then add both areas.

Example:

  • Rectangle A: 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft
  • Rectangle B: 8 ft × 6 ft = 48 sq ft
  • Total: 168 sq ft

How to Calculate Home Square Footage (The US Standard)

When measuring a house for a real estate listing or mortgage appraisal, US professionals follow the ANSI Z765 standard — adopted by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as the benchmark for Gross Living Area (GLA) calculations.

What Counts Toward GLAWhat Does NOT Count
✅ Finished, heated space above ground level❌ Basements — even finished ones (reported separately)
✅ Rooms with ceiling height ≥ 7 feet❌ Attached or detached garages
✅ For sloped ceilings: ≥50% of floor area at 7+ ft❌ Unheated sunrooms, porches without permanent heat
✅ All above-grade floors added together❌ Attics unless finished, heated, and 7 ft ceiling met

Context: The median new single-family home in the US (2024) is 2,146 sq ft with an average of approximately 2,367 sq ft, per the US Census Bureau. Existing homes tend to be smaller.

Material Waste Factor Guide by Project Type

Material / PatternWaste FactorWhy
Hardwood flooring, straight lay5–7%Minimal cuts
Carpet (most rooms)10%Fitting seams and obstacles
Ceramic/porcelain tile, straight lay10%Cuts at walls and doorways
Tile, diagonal (45°) pattern15%Many angled cuts at walls
Herringbone tile pattern15–20%Complex cuts, high breakage
Vinyl plank (LVP), straight lay10%Fitting around fixtures
Natural stone tile15–20%Breakage + size variation
Sod / turf5%Shape fitting and settling
Mulch / gravel / topsoil5–10%Spillage and settling

Formula for total material to order: Materials = Room sq ft × (1 + waste factor decimal)

Example: 200 sq ft room with 10% waste = 200 × 1.10 = 220 sq ft to purchase. Always round up to full boxes or rolls.

Price Per Square Foot Guide — US Benchmarks (2025)

Flooring Cost Per Square Foot (Material + Installation)

Flooring TypeInstalled Cost Range (US)
Carpet$2 – $9/sq ft
Vinyl plank (LVP)$5 – $10/sq ft
Laminate$4 – $9/sq ft
Ceramic/Porcelain tile$6 – $14/sq ft
Hardwood$8 – $15/sq ft

Cost Per Square Foot Formula

Cost per sq ft = Total project cost ÷ Total sq ft

Example: A 2,000 sq ft home sells for $350,000 → $350,000 ÷ 2,000 = $175/sq ft. This lets you compare homes of different sizes in the same market, or estimate material budgets before getting contractor quotes.

Square Footage for Landscaping and Outdoor Projects

This calculator works equally well for outdoor areas. Common outdoor applications:

  • Lawn / sod: Measure the lawn area excluding the house footprint, walkways, and planting beds. Add 5% overage when ordering sod.
  • Garden bed / mulch: Calculate bed area in sq ft, then use our cubic yards calculator to find how much mulch or topsoil you need at a given depth.
  • Patio or deck: Use Rectangle for square/rectangular patios. Use Circle for circular fire pit areas. Add 10% for tile waste.
  • Driveway: Calculate the rectangle, then add any triangular flare at the entry separately using the triangle formula.

Landscaping volume rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep · 108 sq ft at 3 inches · 81 sq ft at 4 inches.

Quick example: A 12×12 ft bedroom = 144 sq ft. At $5/sq ft vinyl plank flooring with 10% waste: you need 159 sq ft = about 8 boxes at 20 sq ft/box. Total material cost: ~$795. That is how material calculation works in practice.
