๐Ÿ’ก How to Calculate Board and Batten Materials

Board and batten is a vertical siding pattern where wide boards are placed edge-to-edge (with a small gap) and narrow battens cover the joints. Common board widths are 6โ€“10 inches with 1โ€“2 inch battens. Calculate the number of boards by dividing wall width by the board width plus gap.

The number of battens is always one fewer than the number of boards (battens cover the gaps between boards). Total linear feet equals the number of pieces multiplied by the wall height. This calculation works for both exterior siding and interior accent walls.

A 12 ft wide ร— 8 ft tall accent wall with 6-inch boards and ยฝ-inch gaps: 12 ft = 144 inches รท 6.5" = 23 boards ร— 8 ft = 184 ft of board stock. Plus 22 battens ร— 8 ft = 176 ft of batten stock.
