π‘ How to Calculate Board Feet
A board foot is a unit of lumber volume: 1 inch thick Γ 12 inches wide Γ 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). The formula is: (thickness in inches Γ width in inches Γ length in feet) Γ· 12. Hardwood and specialty lumber are sold by the board foot rather than by the piece.
When purchasing rough-sawn lumber, nominal dimensions equal actual dimensions. For surfaced lumber (S4S), the actual thickness is less than nominal β a 4/4 board (1 inch nominal) is actually 13/16 inch after surfacing. Price per board foot typically ranges from $3β$15+ depending on species and grade.
Ten 2Γ6 boards, 8 ft long: BF each = (2 Γ 6 Γ 8) Γ· 12 = 8 BF. Total = 80 BF. At $5/BF (walnut), cost = $400.
