πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Board Feet

A board foot is a unit of lumber volume: 1 inch thick Γ— 12 inches wide Γ— 12 inches long (144 cubic inches). The formula is: (thickness in inches Γ— width in inches Γ— length in feet) Γ· 12. Hardwood and specialty lumber are sold by the board foot rather than by the piece.

When purchasing rough-sawn lumber, nominal dimensions equal actual dimensions. For surfaced lumber (S4S), the actual thickness is less than nominal β€” a 4/4 board (1 inch nominal) is actually 13/16 inch after surfacing. Price per board foot typically ranges from $3–$15+ depending on species and grade.

Ten 2Γ—6 boards, 8 ft long: BF each = (2 Γ— 6 Γ— 8) Γ· 12 = 8 BF. Total = 80 BF. At $5/BF (walnut), cost = $400.
