๐Ÿ’ก How to Calculate Concrete Footing Volume

Continuous footings (strip footings) run along the base of foundation walls. The volume calculation is straightforward: length ร— width ร— depth. Standard residential footings are typically 16โ€“24 inches wide and 8โ€“12 inches deep, extending at least 12 inches below the frost line.

Building codes generally require footings to be twice the width of the wall they support. For an 8-inch foundation wall, the footing should be at least 16 inches wide. Rebar reinforcement (typically #4 bars) is required in most jurisdictions.

A 40 ft perimeter footing, 16 inches wide ร— 8 inches deep: volume = 40 ร— 1.33 ร— 0.67 = 35.7 cu ft = 1.32 cu yd. That is about 59 bags of 80 lb concrete.
