πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Concrete Footing Volume

Continuous footings (strip footings) run along the base of foundation walls. The volume calculation is straightforward: length Γ— width Γ— depth. Standard residential footings are typically 16–24 inches wide and 8–12 inches deep, extending at least 12 inches below the frost line.

Building codes generally require footings to be twice the width of the wall they support. For an 8-inch foundation wall, the footing should be at least 16 inches wide. Rebar reinforcement (typically #4 bars) is required in most jurisdictions.

A 40 ft perimeter footing, 16 inches wide Γ— 8 inches deep: volume = 40 Γ— 1.33 Γ— 0.67 = 35.7 cu ft = 1.32 cu yd. That is about 59 bags of 80 lb concrete.
