๐Ÿ’ก How to Calculate Concrete Pier Volume

Pier volume uses the cylinder formula: ฯ€ ร— rยฒ ร— h. Common pier diameters: 8 inches for light loads (fences), 12 inches for deck posts, 18โ€“24 inches for heavy structural loads. Depth must reach below the frost line โ€” 36 to 48 inches in most northern climates.

Sonotube cardboard forms make pouring cylindrical piers easy. Set the tube, add rebar (typically 2 vertical #4 bars), pour concrete, and insert a post bracket before the concrete sets. One 80 lb bag of concrete fills about 0.6 cubic feet.

Six 12-inch diameter piers ร— 48 inches deep: volume each = 3.14 cu ft. Total = 18.8 cu ft = 0.70 cu yd โ‰ˆ 32 bags of 80 lb concrete.
