Tons = cubic yards × material density (tons per cubic yard). Different materials have different densities: gravel ≈ 1.4 ton/yd³, sand ≈ 1.35, topsoil ≈ 1.1, mulch ≈ 0.4, concrete ≈ 2.0. Bulk materials are typically sold by the ton.
