💡 How to Calculate Deck Boards

Count deck boards by dividing the deck width by the board width plus gap. Standard composite boards are 5.5 inches wide with a 1/8-inch gap. Wood boards (5/4×6) are 5.5 inches actual width. Always run boards perpendicular to joists.

Each board needs 2 screws at every joist crossing (typically 16-inch centers). For a 16 ft board crossing joists at 16 inches, that is about 24 screws per board. Hidden fastener systems use 1 clip per joist per board.

A 16×12 ft deck with 5.5-inch boards and 1/8-inch gap: 26 boards × 16 ft = 416 lin ft. About 1,248 deck screws.
