π‘ How Much Deck Stain Do I Need?
Coverage varies by stain type: transparent stains cover ~400 sq ft/gallon (thin coats, mostly absorbed). Semi-transparent: ~300 sq ft/gallon. Solid color stains: ~200 sq ft/gallon (thick film). Clear sealers: ~350 sq ft/gallon.
Most manufacturers recommend 2 coats for optimal protection and color. New, unsealed wood absorbs more stain on the first coat β you may need 10β15% extra. Sand between coats for best adhesion. Re-stain every 2β3 years for horizontal surfaces.
300 sq ft deck, semi-transparent, 2 coats: 600 sq ft total coverage Γ· 300 sq ft/gal = 2 gallons. Buy an extra quart for railings and touch-ups.
