π‘ How to Calculate Elevation Grade
Grade (slope) is the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, expressed as a percentage. A 6% grade means 6 feet of rise over 100 feet of horizontal run. Grade = (rise Γ· run) Γ 100. Positive grade = uphill; negative grade = downhill.
Common grade requirements: lawn drainage (1β2%), driveway maximum (15β25%), wheelchair ramp (ADA maximum 8.33%, or 1:12), French drain (1%), sanitary sewer (1β2%), parking lot (1β5%). Steeper grades increase erosion, stormwater runoff, and construction difficulty.
A 6 ft rise over 100 ft run: grade = 6%, slope ratio = 1:16.7, angle = 3.43Β°. Slope length = 100.2 ft β slightly longer than the horizontal run.
