π‘ How to Calculate Wall Framing
Wall framing requires field studs at regular spacing (16 or 24 inches on center), plus bottom plate and double top plate. Field stud count = (wall length in inches Γ· spacing) + 1. Add 3 extra studs for each corner (California or 3-stud corner assemblies).
Plate stock = wall length Γ 3 (one bottom plate, two top plates). Use 2Γ4 for non-load-bearing walls and 2Γ6 for load-bearing and exterior walls. Headers above openings require doubled lumber or engineered beams sized to the span.
A 20 ft wall at 16" OC: (240 Γ· 16) + 1 = 16 field studs. With 2 corners: 16 + 6 = 22 studs. Plates: 60 lin ft. Total lumber: ~236 lin ft.
