💡 How to Calculate Gabion Wall Materials

Gabion walls are constructed from wire mesh baskets filled with rock or stone. Standard basket sizes range from 3×3×3 ft to 6×3×3 ft. The total number of baskets depends on the wall dimensions divided by individual basket size. Baskets are stacked in rows with each upper row set back slightly for stability.

Each basket is filled with clean, angular rock (typically 4–8 inches). The rock volume equals the basket dimensions, but since rock doesn't pack perfectly, expect about 30–40% void space. Rock weighs approximately 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Gabion walls are permeable, eliminating the need for separate drainage systems.

A 20 ft × 3 ft gabion wall with 6×3×3 ft baskets: 1 row × 4 baskets/row = 4 baskets. Rock fill = 4 × 54 cu ft = 216 cu ft = 8 cu yd ≈ 11.2 tons of rock.
