πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Grading Volumes

Grading involves removing soil (cut) from high spots and adding soil (fill) to low spots to achieve the desired grade. The volume is calculated by multiplying the area by the average depth of cut or fill. For proper drainage, grade away from buildings at a minimum slope of 1/4 inch per foot.

When cut volume exceeds fill, excess soil must be hauled away. When fill exceeds cut, soil must be imported. A standard dump truck carries about 14 cubic yards. Compacted fill volume is about 25% less than loose fill, so order extra material for fill areas.

A 50Γ—50 ft area with 6 inches of cut: 2,500 sq ft Γ— 0.5 ft = 1,250 cu ft = 46.3 cu yd. That is about 3.3 dump truck loads to haul away.
