๐Ÿ’ก How Much Gravel for a Driveway?

A proper gravel driveway has 3 layers: base layer (large #3 stone, 3โ€“4 inches), middle layer (#57 stone, 2 inches), and top/surface layer (#8 or #411 stone, 1โ€“2 inches). Total depth: 6โ€“8 inches minimum. For heavy traffic, use 10โ€“12 inches.

Gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard (varies by stone type and moisture). A 50ร—12 ft driveway at 6 inches deep needs roughly 12.3 cu yd (17.3 tons). Order 10% extra for edge spreading and compaction.

50ร—12 ft driveway, 6" total depth: 300 cu ft = 11.1 cu yd = 15.6 tons. Base layer (#3): 9.3 tons. Middle (#57): 4.7 tons. Top (#8): 1.6 tons.
