πŸ’‘ Ice & Water Shield Coverage

Ice and water shield (also called ice barrier, ice dam membrane, or self-adhering underlayment) is a critical waterproofing membrane used on US roofs to prevent leaks caused by ice dams, wind-driven rain, and water pooling. Building codes in cold-climate zones require it at eaves β€” and many roofers apply it generously at all vulnerable points.

The calculator above accounts for roof pitch (which increases eave run up the slope), 3 roll sizes with pricing, individual penetration counts (skylights, chimneys, vent pipes), and outputs rolls needed + material cost.

Estimate roofing with our roofing calculator. Find your pitch with our roof pitch calculator. For decking, see our plywood sheathing calculator.

Roll Sizes and Coverage

Roll SizeWidthLengthCoverageAvg Cost
3' Γ— 75'36"75 ft225 sq ft$110–$150
3' Γ— 67'36"67 ft200 sq ft$90–$130
3' Γ— 36'36"36 ft108 sq ft$50–$80

All rolls are 36" (3 ft) wide β€” designed to cover the code-minimum eave protection on most roof pitches. One roll of 3' Γ— 75' covers approximately 50 linear feet of eave at 4/12 pitch.

Where to Install Ice & Water Shield

LocationWidth/CoverageCode Required?
Eaves24" past interior wall line (min)Yes β€” IRC R905.1.2
Valleys36" wide (18" each side of centerline)Recommended
Skylights36" around all sides (~16 sq ft each)Recommended
Chimneys36" around all sides (~24 sq ft each)Recommended
Vent pipes18" radius minimum (~4 sq ft each)Recommended
Wall/roof intersectionsFull length of intersectionRecommended

Best practice: Many US roofers install ice and water shield at ALL vulnerable points β€” not just code-minimum eaves. The material cost is modest compared to leak repair costs.

Code Requirements by Climate

  • Cold climates (IECC Zone 5+): IRC R905.1.2 requires ice barrier at eaves extending 24" past the exterior wall line. This includes most of the Northeast, Midwest, and Mountain states.
  • Moderate climates (Zone 4): Required in areas where the mean January temperature is 25Β°F or below. Check local amendments.
  • Warm climates (Zone 1–3): Not required by IRC, but recommended for valleys, low-slope sections, and penetrations. FL, TX, AZ, and CA rarely need eave protection.

How Roof Pitch Affects Eave Run

The 24" code minimum is measured horizontally β€” but the membrane runs up the slope. A steeper pitch means more membrane length (and area) to reach 24" past the wall.

Pitch3 ft HorizontalActual Run% More
2/123 ft3.04 ft+1.4%
4/123 ft3.16 ft+5.4%
6/123 ft3.35 ft+11.8%
8/123 ft3.61 ft+20.2%
12/123 ft4.24 ft+41.4%

At 12/12 pitch, you need 41% more membrane than on a flat roof for the same horizontal coverage. The calculator applies this automatically.

Step-by-Step Estimation

Step 1: Calculate Eave Coverage

Measure eave length (one side of roof). Both eaves need coverage, so double the length. Apply the pitch multiplier to the coverage width.

Example: 40 ft eave Γ— 2 sides Γ— (3 ft Γ— 1.054 at 4/12) = 40 Γ— 2 Γ— 3.16 = 253 sq ft

Step 2: Add Valleys

Each valley needs 36"-wide membrane for its full length. Number of valleys Γ— length Γ— 3 ft.

Example: 2 valleys Γ— 15 ft Γ— 3 ft = 90 sq ft

Step 3: Add Penetrations

Skylights: ~16 sq ft each. Chimneys: ~24 sq ft each. Vent pipes: ~4 sq ft each.

Step 4: Total and Roll Count

Add all areas, add 10% for overlaps, divide by roll coverage.

Example: 253 + 90 + 8 = 351 Γ— 1.10 = 386 sq ft Γ· 225 = 2 rolls

40 ft eave (both sides) at 4/12 pitch (3 ft coverage): 253 sq ft. 2 valleys (15 ft Γ— 3 ft): 90 sq ft. 2 vents: 8 sq ft. With 10% overlap: 386 sq ft = 2 rolls (3'Γ—75') = $260.
