Landscape rock is sold by the ton or cubic yard. Different rock types have different densities: river rock weighs about 1.3 tons per cubic yard, lava rock is very light at 0.5 tons, and dense flagstone weighs about 1.5 tons per cubic yard.

A typical decorative rock bed is 2–3 inches deep. For weed suppression under rock, install landscape fabric first. Order 5–10% extra for irregular shapes and settling. For large areas, bulk delivery is more cost-effective than bagged rock.

A 10Γ—10 ft rock bed at 3 inches deep with river rock: 25 cu ft = 0.93 cu yd Γ— 1.3 tons/yd = 1.2 tons. At $50/ton, that is about $60 in material.
