πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Lumber Weight

Lumber weight depends on species, dimensions, and moisture content. Each species has a different density measured in pounds per cubic foot at 12% moisture content. Common softwoods range from 23 lb/cf (cedar) to 36 lb/cf (southern pine). Hardwoods range from 35 lb/cf (cherry) to 47 lb/cf (oak).

Calculate volume using actual (not nominal) dimensions. A nominal 2Γ—6 is actually 1.5 Γ— 5.5 inches. Multiply the actual cross-section by length to get volume, then multiply by density. Green (wet) lumber weighs significantly more than kiln-dried lumber.

Ten 2Γ—6 SPF boards, 8 ft long: actual size 1.5 Γ— 5.5 in. Volume each = 0.382 cu ft. Weight each = 10.7 lbs. Total = 107 lbs.
