πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Mortar Quantities

Mortar volume depends on masonry unit size and joint thickness. Standard bricks have about 7 joints per square foot of wall, CMU blocks have about 3.5, and natural stone varies widely. Multiply the number of joints by the joint cross-section area to get total mortar volume.

Pre-mixed mortar bags (Type S or Type N) yield about 0.5–0.6 cubic feet per 60–80 lb bag. For site mixing, use a 1:3 portland-to-sand ratio by volume. Type S mortar is standard for structural and below-grade work; Type N is for above-grade non-structural applications.

A 100 sq ft brick wall with 3/8-inch joints: mortar volume β‰ˆ 1.8 cu ft. That's about 4 bags of 60 lb pre-mix, or about half a bag of portland cement plus 1.4 cu ft of sand.
