π‘ How to Calculate Mulch Needs
Mulch is essential for healthy landscaping throughout the United States. It retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature, and creates a polished, finished look for garden beds, tree rings, and walkways. Knowing exactly how much mulch to buy prevents waste and ensures even coverage.
The calculator above supports 8 common mulch types, automatically includes 10% overage for settlement and spillage, calculates bags needed (2 or 3 cu ft), and compares bagged vs. bulk pricing so you can see exactly how much you'll save buying in bulk.

Mulch Types and Recommended Depth
| Mulch Type | Recommended Depth | Weight per Cu Yd | Bag Cost (2 cu ft) | Bulk Cost per Cu Yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shredded Hardwood Bark | 3β4 inches | ~600 lbs | $4β$5 | $25β$35 |
| Cedar Mulch | 2β3 inches | ~550 lbs | $5β$7 | $35β$45 |
| Pine Bark Nuggets | 3β4 inches | ~450 lbs | $4β$6 | $30β$40 |
| Pine Straw | 3β4 inches | ~300 lbs | $5β$8/bale | $25β$35 |
| Wood Chips | 3β4 inches | ~500 lbs | $3β$5 | $20β$30 |
| Dyed Mulch (black/red/brown) | 2β3 inches | ~600 lbs | $4β$6 | $30β$40 |
| Rubber Mulch | 1β2 inches | ~1,200 lbs | $7β$10 | $150β$180 |
| Decorative Stone Mulch | 2 inches | ~2,800 lbs | $5β$8 | $45β$70 |
Step-by-Step Mulch Calculation
Step 1: Measure the Area
Measure the length and width of each bed in feet. For circular tree rings, measure the diameter. For irregular beds, break them into rectangles and circles, then add the results.
Step 2: Choose Depth
Select depth based on mulch type and purpose:
- Fine mulch (decomposed, cocoa hull): 1β2 inches
- Medium mulch (shredded bark, cedar): 2β3 inches
- Coarse mulch (pine bark nuggets, wood chips): 3β4 inches
- Rubber mulch (playgrounds): 3β6 inches for fall protection
- Weed suppression only: 4+ inches with landscape fabric underneath
Step 3: Calculate Volume
Rectangle: Length (ft) Γ Width (ft) Γ Depth (in) Γ· 12 = Cubic Feet. Divide by 27 for Cubic Yards.
Circle: Ο Γ (Diameter Γ· 2)Β² Γ Depth (in) Γ· 12 = Cubic Feet. Divide by 27 for Cubic Yards.
Step 4: Add 10% Overage
Mulch is lightweight and tends to migrate and settle. Add 10% extra to account for spillage, settlement, and transport loss. If buying bags, always round up.
Mulch Coverage Chart
How much area does 1 cubic yard of mulch cover at different depths?
| Depth | Coverage (sq ft) | Bags (2 cu ft) | Bags (3 cu ft) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 324 sq ft | 14 | 9 | Light top-up, fine mulch |
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | 14 | 9 | Cedar, dyed, stone |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | 14 | 9 | Standard organic mulch |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | 14 | 9 | Heavy weed suppression |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | 14 | 9 | Playground rubber mulch |
Note: Bag counts are per cubic yard regardless of depth. Coverage area changes with depth, but 1 cu yd always equals 27 cu ft = 14 bags (2 cu ft) or 9 bags (3 cu ft).
Bagged vs. Bulk: Which Is Cheaper?
| Method | Cost per Cu Yd | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bagged (2 cu ft) | $54β$94 equivalent | Easy to transport, fits in car, no minimum order | More expensive per cu yd, more plastic waste |
| Bulk delivery | $20β$45 + delivery | 40β60% cheaper, less waste | Needs driveway space, delivery fee ($50β$100) |
Break-even point: For most mulch types, buying bulk becomes cheaper at about 3+ cubic yards (40+ bags). Below that, bags may be more practical despite the higher per-unit cost.
