πŸ’‘ How Much Base Material for Pavers?

A proper paver base has two layers: compacted gravel base (4–6 inches for pedestrian, 8–12 inches for vehicular) and sand bedding (1 inch). The gravel base provides structural support while the sand bedding lets you level individual pavers.

Crushed gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard. Sand weighs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Always compact the gravel base in 2-inch lifts with a plate compactor. The sand layer should NOT be compacted before laying pavers β€” it's screeded flat.

200 sq ft patio, 6" gravel base + 1" sand: Gravel = 3.7 cu yd (5.1 tons). Sand = 0.62 cu yd (0.8 tons). Order 10% extra for edge compaction.
