💡 How to Calculate Paver Materials
Paver calculations divide the project area by the area of a single paver (including the joint gap). Common sizes include 4×8 inches (standard brick), 6×6, 6×9, and 12×12 inches. The joint gap is typically ¼ inch for polymeric sand or ⅛ inch for dry-laid.
A proper paver installation requires three layers below the pavers: compacted subgrade, 4–6 inches of crushed gravel base, and 1 inch of leveling sand. After laying, polymeric sand is swept into the joints and activated with water to lock pavers in place.
A 12×10 ft patio with 4×8" pavers and ¼" gap = 120 sq ft ÷ 0.233 sq ft/paver = 515 pavers. Add 10% waste = 567 pavers. Plus 1.5 cu yd gravel base, 0.4 cu yd leveling sand, and 5 bags of polymeric sand.
