What Is Plastering?

Plastering is the process of applying a thin coat of cement mortar on walls, ceilings, and columns to create a smooth, protective, and aesthetically pleasing surface. It protects masonry from moisture, provides a base for painting, and improves structural durability.

Plastering Mix Ratios

Mix RatioApplicationThickness
1:3External walls, waterproofing15โ€“20 mm
1:4External walls (standard)12โ€“15 mm
1:5Internal walls12 mm
1:6Ceilings, internal lean plaster6โ€“8 mm

How to Calculate Plastering Materials

  1. Find the area โ€” Length ร— Height of each wall. Subtract door/window openings.
  2. Calculate wet volume โ€” Area ร— Thickness (in meters).
  3. Convert to dry volume โ€” Multiply wet volume by 1.35 (shrinkage factor).
  4. Split by ratio โ€” For 1:4, cement = dry vol ร— 1/5, sand = dry vol ร— 4/5.
  5. Convert cement to bags โ€” 1 bag of 50 kg cement = 0.035 mยณ.
