πŸ’‘ Actual vs. Nominal Plywood Thickness

Like dimensional lumber, plywood nominal thickness differs from actual thickness. A nominal 3/4-inch sheet is actually 23/32 inch (0.703 inches). This matters for dadoes, rabbets, and any joint where precise fit is required.

A standard 4Γ—8 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood weighs about 61 lbs. Thinner sheets are lighter: 1/4-inch weighs about 22 lbs, 1/2-inch about 41 lbs. Weight varies by wood species and grade. Baltic birch plywood runs true to nominal thickness and is heavier than softwood plywood.

Nominal 3/4" plywood is actually 0.703" (23/32"). A router bit set to 3/4" will make a dado too wide. Use 23/32" or test-fit before routing.
