What Is RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete)?

RCC is concrete strengthened with steel reinforcement bars (rebar). Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension; steel bars handle the tensile forces. Together, they form the structural backbone of modern construction โ€” beams, columns, slabs, footings, and retaining walls.

Steel Percentage by Member

Structural MemberSteel %Typical Use
Slab0.7โ€“1.0%Floor and roof slabs
Beam1.0โ€“2.0%Load-bearing beams
Column1.5โ€“3.0%Vertical load transfer
Footing0.5โ€“0.8%Foundation footings
Staircase1.0โ€“1.5%Stair waist slab

Thumb Rule for Steel in Buildings

For residential buildings: 3.5โ€“5.5 kg of steel per sq ft of built-up area. For commercial: 5โ€“7 kg/sq ft. This includes all structural members (foundation, columns, beams, slabs).
