What Is RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete)?
RCC is concrete strengthened with steel reinforcement bars (rebar). Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension; steel bars handle the tensile forces. Together, they form the structural backbone of modern construction โ beams, columns, slabs, footings, and retaining walls.
Steel Percentage by Member
| Structural Member | Steel % | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Slab | 0.7โ1.0% | Floor and roof slabs |
| Beam | 1.0โ2.0% | Load-bearing beams |
| Column | 1.5โ3.0% | Vertical load transfer |
| Footing | 0.5โ0.8% | Foundation footings |
| Staircase | 1.0โ1.5% | Stair waist slab |
Thumb Rule for Steel in Buildings
For residential buildings: 3.5โ5.5 kg of steel per sq ft of built-up area. For commercial: 5โ7 kg/sq ft. This includes all structural members (foundation, columns, beams, slabs).
