πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Ridge Vent

Ridge vents run along the peak of the roof and provide exhaust ventilation for the attic. They work best when paired with soffit vents (intake). Standard ridge vent pieces are 4 feet long and 10–14 inches wide. The total vent length should match the full ridge length for optimal airflow.

Net Free Area (NFA) is the actual open area for airflow β€” typically 18 sq in per linear foot of quality ridge vent. Code requires a minimum 1:150 ratio of NFA to attic floor area (or 1:300 with balanced intake/exhaust). Cap shingles cover the vent, with one bundle covering 25–35 linear feet.

A 30 ft ridge with 4 ft vent pieces: 8 pieces needed. NFA = 30 Γ— 18 = 540 sq in. Cap shingle bundles: 1. That ventilates up to 810 sq ft of attic (at 1:150 ratio).
