πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Rip Rap

Rip rap is large, angular stone (typically 4–24 inches diameter) used for erosion control. It weighs about 1.5 tons per cubic yard. Minimum thickness should be 1.5Γ— the maximum stone diameter, or 12 inches, whichever is greater.

Place rip rap on filter fabric (geotextile) to prevent fine soil from migrating through the rock layer. For slopes steeper than 2:1, use grouted rip rap or consider retaining walls instead. Size selection depends on water velocity and slope angle.

A 30Γ—10 ft stream bank at 12 inches thick: volume = 300 cu ft = 11.1 cu yd Γ— 1.5 = 16.7 tons. At $40/ton, cost β‰ˆ $667.
