πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Shelf Brackets

Bracket spacing depends on shelf material, load, and bracket type. Plywood can span 36 inches under light loads. MDF should not span more than 24 inches due to sag. Solid hardwood can span 42 inches. Heavy loads require closer spacing (24 inches max).

Place brackets with no more than 25% of spacing as end overhang β€” for 36-inch spacing, max overhang is 9 inches. Bracket depth should be at least 2/3 of shelf depth for adequate support. Anchor into wall studs whenever possible; drywall anchors have limited load capacity.

A 48-inch plywood shelf with 20 lb load: 2 brackets needed at 48-inch spacing. If load increases to 40 lbs, use 3 brackets at 24-inch spacing for sag prevention.
