πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Roofing Shingles

Roofing is measured in squares β€” one square = 100 sq ft. Standard 3-tab shingles come 3 bundles per square. Architectural shingles may require 4–5 bundles per square. Account for roof pitch using the pitch multiplier.

Add 10–15% waste for valleys, hips, ridges, and starter courses. Complex roofs with many valleys and dormers waste more material. Ridge cap shingles are sold separately β€” plan 1 bundle per 20–35 linear feet of ridge.

A 30Γ—24 ft gable roof at 6/12 pitch: flat area = 720 sq ft Γ— 1.118 = 805 sq ft + 10% = 886 sq ft = 8.9 squares = 27 bundles of 3-tab shingles.
