π‘ How to Calculate Siding Materials
Siding is measured in 'squares' (100 sq ft each), similar to roofing. Start by calculating the gross wall area: average wall length Γ wall height Γ number of walls, plus any gable-end triangles. Then subtract openings: standard doors (β 21 sq ft each) and windows (β 15 sq ft each).
Add 10% waste for standard rectangular homes with few obstacles. Increase to 15% for homes with many windows, unusual angles, or complex trim details. Siding types differ in coverage β vinyl panels are typically sold by the square, while fiber cement comes in individual planks.
A home with 4 walls averaging 40Γ9 ft plus 60 sq ft of gables, with 2 doors and 8 windows: gross = 1,500 sq ft β 162 sq ft openings = 1,338 sq ft net. With 10% waste = 14.7 squares of siding.
