πŸ’‘ Siding Material Estimation

Siding protects your home's exterior from weather, insects, and moisture while defining its curb appeal. Choosing the right siding material and accurately estimating quantities are critical steps in any US home exterior project β€” whether it's new construction, re-siding, or partial repairs.

The calculator above supports 6 siding types with auto-filled cost per square, gable area input, individual window and door counts (auto-deducted at standard sizes), adjustable waste factor, and weight estimation for structural and delivery planning.

For vinyl, see our vinyl siding calculator. For clapboard, try our clapboard siding calculator. Measure wall area with our square footage calculator.

Most popular in the US: Vinyl leads with ~33% market share (affordable, low maintenance). Fiber cement (James Hardie) is fastest-growing (fire-resistant, durable). Engineered wood (LP SmartSide) is gaining popularity as a wood-look alternative with better durability.

Step-by-Step Siding Estimation

Step 1: Measure Wall Area

Measure the perimeter of the house and the wall height (ground to eave). Multiply to get rectangular wall area.

Example: 150 ft perimeter Γ— 9 ft height = 1,350 sq ft

Step 2: Add Gable Area

Gable walls are triangular. Measure width and height (from eave to peak). Area = Β½ Γ— width Γ— height. Add all gable areas together.

Example: Two gables at 30 ft wide Γ— 6 ft tall = 2 Γ— (Β½ Γ— 30 Γ— 6) = 180 sq ft

Step 3: Subtract Openings

Deduct window and door areas from the gross total:

OpeningTypical SizeArea
Standard window3 ft Γ— 5 ft15 sq ft
Large window4 ft Γ— 5 ft20 sq ft
Entry door3 ft Γ— 7 ft21 sq ft
Sliding glass door6 ft Γ— 7 ft42 sq ft
Garage door (single)9 ft Γ— 7 ft63 sq ft
Garage door (double)16 ft Γ— 7 ft112 sq ft

The calculator uses 15 sq ft per window and 21 sq ft per door as standard estimates.

Step 4: Add Waste

Add 10% for simple rectangular homes. Add 15% for homes with many corners, dormers, or complex trim. Divide total by 100 to get squares.

Metal / Aluminum$200–$400$5–$10$7,500–$15,000
Stone Veneer$600–$1,000$15–$30$22,500–$45,000

Additional costs: Old siding removal: $1–$3/sq ft. House wrap (Tyvek): $0.50–$1/sq ft. Trim and accessories: 10–15% of material cost. Permits: $100–$500 depending on jurisdiction.

150 ft perimeter Γ— 9 ft height + 100 sq ft gables = 1,450 sq ft gross. Minus 8 windows + 2 doors (162 sq ft) = 1,288 sq ft net + 10% waste = 14.2 squares.
