π‘ How to Calculate Soil Volume
Soil volume = length Γ width Γ depth. For a 4Γ8 ft raised bed, 12 inches deep: 4 Γ 8 Γ 1 = 32 cu ft (1.19 cu yd). Bags of soil are sold in 1 or 2 cu ft sizes. Bulk soil by the cubic yard is cheaper for large projects.
For raised beds, use a mix of 60% topsoil, 30% compost, and 10% perlite or vermiculite. Plan for 5β10% settling after the first watering β fill beds slightly higher than needed. Deeper beds (12β18 inches) support root vegetables; 6β8 inches is fine for herbs and lettuce.
A 4Γ8 ft raised bed, 12" deep: 32 cu ft = 1.19 cu yd. That's 32 bags (1 cu ft) or 16 bags (2 cu ft). Bulk delivery is cheaper above 3 cu yd.
