💡 How to Calculate Square Meters
Square meters (m²) is the SI unit of area, used worldwide for real estate, construction, flooring, landscaping, and international trade. In the US, square meters are increasingly used alongside square feet for global comparisons and scientific applications. Convert to US units with our square footage calculator or square yards calculator.
The calculator above supports 3 shapes (rectangle, circle, triangle), accepts 4 input units (meters, cm, feet, inches), and includes cost estimation per m². For length conversions, try our feet and inches calculator.
Square Meter Formulas
| Shape | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | L × W | 5 m × 4 m = 20 m² |
| Circle | π × r² | r = 3 m → π × 9 = 28.27 m² |
| Triangle | ½ × base × height | 6 m × 4 m ÷ 2 = 12 m² |
How to Convert Square Feet to Square Meters
Square meters = square feet × 0.0929
Square feet = square meters × 10.764
Examples:
- 100 sq ft = 9.29 m²
- 200 sq ft = 18.58 m²
- 500 sq ft = 46.45 m²
- 1,000 sq ft = 92.90 m²
- 2,000 sq ft = 185.81 m²

Measuring Oddly Shaped Rooms
For L-shaped, T-shaped, or irregular rooms: divide the space into rectangles, calculate each area in m², and add them together. Example: an L-shaped room = rectangle A (3 × 5 = 15 m²) + rectangle B (2 × 3 = 6 m²) = 21 m² total.
