💡 How Much Stone Do I Need?
Stone volume = area × depth. Convert to cubic yards (divide cubic feet by 27), then multiply by the stone's density to get tons. Crushed stone: 1.4 tons/cu yd. River rock: 1.35 tons/cu yd. Flagstone: 1.5 tons/cu yd. Lava rock: 0.5 tons/cu yd (much lighter).
Coverage depth depends on application: decorative ground cover (2–3 inches), pathway (3–4 inches), drainage (4–6 inches), driveway base (6–12 inches). Order 10% extra for settling, compaction, and edge irregularities. Bulk stone is sold by the ton — one ton covers roughly 100 sq ft at 2-inch depth.
20×15 ft patio area, 3" crushed stone: 300 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 75 cu ft = 2.8 cu yd × 1.4 = 3.9 tons. At $50/ton: ~$194. Lava rock same area: 1.4 tons at $100/ton = $139.
