πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Wall Studs

Wall stud count starts with field studs: (wall length in inches Γ· spacing) + 1. Then add framing for openings: each door or window needs 2 king studs (full height) and 2 jack studs (support the header). Windows also need cripple studs above and below.

Standard stud spacing is 16 inches on center for load-bearing walls. Plate lumber (bottom plate + double top plate) = wall length Γ— 3. For pre-cut studs (92-5/8 inches), pair with standard plates for an 8-foot finished wall height including drywall.

A 20 ft wall at 16" OC with 1 door and 2 windows: 16 field studs + 6 king + 6 jack + 4 cripples = 32 studs. Stud lumber: 256 lin ft. Plates: 60 lin ft.
