💡 How to Calculate Topsoil Quantities

Topsoil is sold by the cubic yard or by the bag. One cubic yard covers approximately 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep — the recommended minimum for establishing new grass or garden beds. For raised beds, plan for 6–12 inches of depth.

Different soil products have different densities: standard topsoil weighs about 1.1 tons per cubic yard, garden mix about 1.0 ton, and compost about 0.6 tons. Knowing the density helps you estimate delivery weight and plan for equipment access.

A 10×10 ft raised bed at 6 inches deep = 50 cu ft = 1.85 cu yd of topsoil ≈ 2 tons. That's roughly 100 bags of 40 lb soil. Bulk delivery is typically 50–70% cheaper than buying bags.
