πŸ’‘ How to Calculate Trench Fill Volume

Trench fill volume = length Γ— width Γ— depth. For utility trenches, the fill typically consists of bedding material (sand or pea gravel around the pipe) and backfill (native soil or gravel above). Pipe diameter reduces the fill volume slightly.

Standard utility trench widths: 12 inches for small pipes (water, electrical), 18–24 inches for sewer and drain pipes, 36–48 inches for large utilities. Compact backfill in 6-inch lifts to prevent settlement. Use clean fill β€” no rocks, debris, or organic material.

A 30 ft trench, 12 inches wide Γ— 24 inches deep with gravel fill: volume = 60 cu ft = 2.2 cu yd β‰ˆ 3.1 tons.
