Ovulation

Definition

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg (ovum) from one of the ovaries, which then travels down the fallopian tube where it may be fertilized by sperm. In a typical 28-day menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14 (approximately 14 days before the next period). The fertile window spans approximately 5 days before ovulation through 1 day after, as sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days while the egg is viable for 12โ€“24 hours after release. Ovulation can be tracked through basal body temperature (rises 0.5โ€“1ยฐF after ovulation), cervical mucus changes, ovulation predictor kits (detect LH surge), and cycle tracking apps.

What is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg (ovum) from one of the ovaries into the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm. It is the most fertile point of the menstrual cycle and the event that makes pregnancy possible. Understanding ovulation timing is critical for both achieving and avoiding pregnancy.
