SGST
Definition
State GST — the portion of GST collected by the State Government on intra-state transactions. Combined with CGST, it forms the total GST on intra-state supplies. Each state has its own SGST legislation.
Why is SGST Important?
Navigating the Indian tax system requires a clear understanding of terms like SGST. With the introduction of the new income tax regime alongside the old one, taxpayers must evaluate their deductions, exemptions, and tax brackets carefully. This concept is a key component in optimizing your tax liabilities under the Income Tax Act and GST framework.
Proper tax planning using this metric can help individuals and businesses maximize their take-home income while remaining fully compliant with government regulations. What is SGST?
State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) is the portion of GST collected by the State Government on intra-state supplies. It is charged at the same rate as CGST and replaces the earlier state-level taxes like VAT, Entry Tax, and Entertainment Tax.
SGST Collection Flow
- SGST is collected by the seller and deposited with the state government where the supply originates
- Revenue goes to the respective state's Consolidated Fund
- Used for state-level infrastructure, welfare, and development programs
