BMI & Health β Understanding Your Body Mass Index Numbers
What your BMI really means, its limitations, and what other health metrics to track. Evidence-based guide to weight and health.

BMI Categories Explained
| BMI Range | Category | Health Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Below 16 | Severely Underweight | Very High |
| 16 - 18.4 | Underweight | High |
| 18.5 - 24.9 | Normal Weight | Low |
| 25 - 29.9 | Overweight | Increased |
| 30 - 34.9 | Obese (Class I) | High |
| 35 - 39.9 | Obese (Class II) | Very High |
| 40+ | Obese (Class III) | Extremely High |
The 'normal' range of 18.5-24.9 is associated with the lowest risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.
How BMI is Calculated
Formula: BMI = Weight (kg) Γ· HeightΒ² (mΒ²)
Example: 70 kg, 170 cm (1.7 m) BMI = 70 Γ· (1.7 Γ 1.7) = 70 Γ· 2.89 = 24.2 (Normal)
| **Height-weight ranges for Normal BMI**: | |
|---|---|
| Height | Healthy Weight Range |
| 155 cm (5'1") | 44 - 60 kg |
| 160 cm (5'3") | 47 - 64 kg |
| 165 cm (5'5") | 50 - 68 kg |
| 170 cm (5'7") | 53 - 72 kg |
| 175 cm (5'9") | 57 - 76 kg |
| 180 cm (5'11") | 60 - 81 kg |
| 185 cm (6'1") | 63 - 85 kg |
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a useful screening tool but has significant limitations:
1. Doesn't distinguish muscle from fat: A muscular athlete with 10% body fat could have a BMI of 28 ('overweight').
2. Doesn't account for body composition: Two people with the same BMI can have very different health risks based on fat distribution.
3. Age and sex: BMI categories were developed for adults 20+. They don't apply to children, pregnant women, or elderly.
4. Ethnicity: South Asians have higher health risks at lower BMIs. Some guidelines suggest BMI 23+ (not 25+) as overweight for Asian populations.
Better metrics to track alongside BMI: Waist circumference (<90 cm men, <80 cm women), waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage.
BMI for Indian Adults β Asian Cutoffs
The WHO has proposed lower BMI cutoffs for Asian populations due to higher metabolic risks:
| Category | Standard WHO | Asian/Indian |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | 18.5 - 24.9 | 18.5 - 22.9 |
| Overweight | 25 - 29.9 | 23 - 24.9 |
| Obese | 30+ | 25+ |
Under Asian cutoffs, a BMI of 24 would be classified as 'overweight' rather than 'normal'. This is important for Indian users of our BMI Calculator.
