BMI & Health β€” Understanding Your Body Mass Index Numbers

BMI Categories Explained

BMI RangeCategoryHealth Risk
Below 16Severely UnderweightVery High
16 - 18.4UnderweightHigh
18.5 - 24.9Normal WeightLow
25 - 29.9OverweightIncreased
30 - 34.9Obese (Class I)High
35 - 39.9Obese (Class II)Very High
40+Obese (Class III)Extremely High

The 'normal' range of 18.5-24.9 is associated with the lowest risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

How BMI is Calculated

Formula: BMI = Weight (kg) Γ· HeightΒ² (mΒ²)

Example: 70 kg, 170 cm (1.7 m) BMI = 70 Γ· (1.7 Γ— 1.7) = 70 Γ· 2.89 = 24.2 (Normal)

**Height-weight ranges for Normal BMI**:
HeightHealthy Weight Range
155 cm (5'1")44 - 60 kg
160 cm (5'3")47 - 64 kg
165 cm (5'5")50 - 68 kg
170 cm (5'7")53 - 72 kg
175 cm (5'9")57 - 76 kg
180 cm (5'11")60 - 81 kg
185 cm (6'1")63 - 85 kg

Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful screening tool but has significant limitations:

1. Doesn't distinguish muscle from fat: A muscular athlete with 10% body fat could have a BMI of 28 ('overweight').

2. Doesn't account for body composition: Two people with the same BMI can have very different health risks based on fat distribution.

3. Age and sex: BMI categories were developed for adults 20+. They don't apply to children, pregnant women, or elderly.

4. Ethnicity: South Asians have higher health risks at lower BMIs. Some guidelines suggest BMI 23+ (not 25+) as overweight for Asian populations.

Better metrics to track alongside BMI: Waist circumference (<90 cm men, <80 cm women), waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage.

BMI for Indian Adults β€” Asian Cutoffs

The WHO has proposed lower BMI cutoffs for Asian populations due to higher metabolic risks:

CategoryStandard WHOAsian/Indian
Normal18.5 - 24.918.5 - 22.9
Overweight25 - 29.923 - 24.9
Obese30+25+

Under Asian cutoffs, a BMI of 24 would be classified as 'overweight' rather than 'normal'. This is important for Indian users of our BMI Calculator.
