Complete Iqama Renewal Guide for Saudi Arabia — Costs, Process & Penalties (2025/2026)

Everything you need to know about renewing your Iqama in Saudi Arabia — step-by-step process, full cost breakdown, dependent fees, penalty structure, Absher and Muqeem platforms, and Labor Reform changes.

My Iqama expires next month. How much will renewal cost with 2 dependents, what's the process, and what happens if I'm late?

What is an Iqama and Who Needs One?

An Iqama (إقامة) is the residence permit issued to foreign nationals living and working in Saudi Arabia. It serves as your primary identification document — you'll need it for everything: banking, healthcare, driving, renting property, and interacting with government services.

Who needs an Iqama:

  • All foreign workers employed in Saudi Arabia
  • Dependent family members (spouse, children, parents) of foreign workers
  • Foreign investors with MISA licenses
  • Domestic workers (maids, drivers, cooks)

Who does NOT need an Iqama:

  • Saudi citizens and GCC nationals
  • Tourist and business visa holders (stays under 90 days)
  • Hajj and Umrah visa holders

Important numbers on your Iqama:

  • Iqama Number — Your 10-digit ID used for everything
  • Profession — Must match your actual job (violations are penalized)
  • Sponsor — Your employer (kafeel)
  • Expiry Date — Iqamas are valid for 1 year (some for 2 years)

Step-by-Step Iqama Renewal Process

Iqama renewal is initiated by your employer (sponsor), not by you directly. Here's the process:

For the Employer (via Muqeem or Qiwa):

  • Log into Muqeem (muqeem.com.sa) or Qiwa platform
  • Select the employee's Iqama for renewal
  • System checks for any violations (traffic fines, overstay on dependents, etc.)
  • Pay the fees through SADAD
  • New expiry date is issued digitally — no physical card needed

For the Employee:

  • Ensure your passport is valid (must not expire before Iqama renewal date)
  • Clear any traffic violations through Absher
  • Ensure health insurance is active (mandatory)
  • Verify renewal through Absher Afrad app

Processing time: Usually instant once payment is made. In some cases, up to 3 business days.

Pro tip: Your employer should renew your Iqama at least 2 weeks before expiry to avoid complications. If your employer delays, you can request renewal through the Labor Reform Initiative's self-service portal.

Complete Cost Breakdown — Employee Only

Here's every fee associated with Iqama renewal for a single employee (no dependents):

FeeAmountPaid By
Iqama renewal (base)SAR 650/yearEmployer
Work permit fee (compliant company)SAR 8,400/yearEmployer
Work permit fee (non-compliant company)SAR 9,600/yearEmployer
Health insurance (mandatory)SAR 500–2,000/yearEmployer
Total (employee only, compliant)SAR 9,550–11,050/year
Total (employee only, non-compliant)SAR 10,750–12,250/year

What 'compliant' vs 'non-compliant' means: Compliant companies are in Green or Platinum Nitaqat bands. Non-compliant companies (Red zone) pay higher work permit fees — SAR 800/month vs SAR 700/month.

Who pays what? By Saudi Labor Law, the employer is responsible for all Iqama and work permit fees. However, some employers contractually pass these costs to employees (common in small businesses). Check your employment contract.

Dependent Costs — Spouse, Children & Parents

If your family lives with you in Saudi Arabia, each dependent incurs significant annual costs:

Dependent Levy (رسوم المرافقين):

YearMonthly RateAnnual Rate
2017SAR 100SAR 1,200
2018SAR 200SAR 2,400
2019SAR 300SAR 3,600
2020–2026SAR 400SAR 4,800

Full cost per dependent per year:

ItemCost
Dependent levySAR 4,800
Dependent Iqama renewalSAR 500
Health insurance (mandatory)SAR 500–1,500
Total per dependentSAR 5,800–6,800

Example: Employee + Spouse + 2 Children:

CategoryAnnual Cost
Employee Iqama + work permit + insuranceSAR 9,550
Spouse (levy + Iqama + insurance)SAR 6,300
Child 1 (levy + Iqama + insurance)SAR 6,300
Child 2 (levy + Iqama + insurance)SAR 6,300
Grand totalSAR 28,450/year
Monthly equivalentSAR 2,371/month

Exception: Children born in Saudi Arabia to Saudi mothers are exempt from the dependent levy. Some professions (doctors, nurses) may also have reduced or waived dependent fees during their first year.

Financial reality check: For a family of 4, you need at least SAR 2,371/month just for Iqama and dependent costs — before rent, food, school fees, or other living expenses. Factor this into salary negotiations.

Late Renewal Penalties — Don't Miss the Deadline

Letting your Iqama expire has escalating consequences:

OffensePenalty
First late renewalSAR 500 fine
Second late renewalSAR 1,000 fine
Third late renewalDeportation + re-entry ban

Additional consequences of an expired Iqama:

  • Cannot use banking services (some banks freeze accounts)
  • Cannot renew driving license
  • Cannot exit and re-enter the country
  • Children cannot attend school
  • Risk of arrest during routine ID checks

For employers who delay renewal:

  • Fine of SAR 1,000–10,000 for each employee with expired Iqama
  • MHRSD may block access to Qiwa services
  • May affect Nitaqat rating

Pro tip: Set a reminder 30 days before expiry. The Absher app and Tawakkalna app both show your Iqama expiry date and send notifications. Don't rely on your employer to remember — follow up proactively.

Absher, Muqeem & the Labor Reform Initiative

Three platforms govern your Iqama-related services:

Absher (أبشر) — For Individuals:

  • Check Iqama expiry date and status
  • View visa applications and travel permits
  • Pay traffic fines
  • Update personal information
  • Download digital Iqama card
  • Request exit/re-entry visa (SAR 200 single, SAR 500 multiple)

Muqeem (مقيم) — For Employers:

  • Initiate Iqama renewals
  • Process work permits
  • Manage employee transfers
  • Issue visa applications

Qiwa (قوى) — For Labor Services:

  • Employment contract documentation
  • Saudization monitoring
  • Employee transfer approvals
  • Work permit management

The Labor Reform Initiative (March 2021): This major reform changed everything for expat workers:

  • Job mobility: Change employers without current employer's consent (after contract ends or after 1 year)
  • Exit/re-entry visa: Travel without employer's permission
  • Final exit visa: Leave Saudi Arabia without employer's consent

What this means: You are no longer 'trapped' under the old Kafala sponsorship system. If your employer mistreats you or delays your Iqama renewal, you have legal recourse through the Labor Reform digital services.
