How to Convert Fluid Ounces to Milliliters

Multiply the number of US fluid ounces by 29.5735:

mL = fluid ounces × 29.5735

Example: 8 fl oz (1 cup)
= 8 × 29.5735 = 236.6 mL

Example: 16 fl oz (1 pint)
= 16 × 29.5735 = 473.2 mL

Example: 2 fl oz (medicine dose)
= 2 × 29.5735 = 59.1 mL

Fluid Ounce vs. Weight Ounce — Not the Same!

A fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume, while an ounce (oz) measures weight. They are completely different units that happen to share the word "ounce":

  • 1 fl oz of water weighs approximately 1.043 oz — close but not exact
  • 1 fl oz of honey weighs about 1.5 oz (honey is denser than water)
  • 1 fl oz of oil weighs about 0.95 oz (oil is lighter than water)

In recipes: "2 oz of chocolate" means weight (use a scale), while "2 fl oz of vanilla" means volume (use a measuring cup).

US Fluid Ounce vs. Imperial Fluid Ounce

TypeVolumeWhere Used
US Fluid Ounce29.5735 mLUnited States
Imperial Fluid Ounce28.4131 mLUK (historical)

A US fluid ounce is about 4% larger than an Imperial fluid ounce. This converter uses the US fluid ounce.

What Is a Fluid Ounce?

A US fluid ounce (fl oz) is a unit of volume equal to 1/128 of a US gallon, 1/8 of a cup, or 29.5735 milliliters. It is the standard unit for measuring liquid volumes on nutrition labels, beverage containers, and medicine dosages in the United States.

What Is a Milliliter?

A milliliter (mL) is a metric unit of volume equal to 1/1,000 of a liter or 1 cubic centimeter (cc). It is used worldwide for measuring small liquid volumes, especially in medicine, science, and international cooking. Most US medicine doses are now labeled in both fl oz and mL.
