How to Convert Grams to Teaspoons
A US teaspoon holds 4.929 milliliters. Since different ingredients have different densities, the same weight occupies different volumes. To convert grams to teaspoons:
Example: 7 grams of active dry yeast (density 0.63 g/mL)
= 7 ÷ (4.929 × 0.63) = 7 ÷ 3.105 = 2.25 tsp
That's why a standard 7g yeast packet = 2¼ teaspoons!
Example: 5 grams of salt (density 1.20 g/mL)
= 5 ÷ (4.929 × 1.20) = 5 ÷ 5.915 = 0.85 tsp

Why Grams Are More Accurate Than Teaspoons
Professional bakers always weigh ingredients in grams rather than using teaspoons because:
- Teaspoons vary by packing: A "heaped" teaspoon of flour can weigh 50% more than a "level" teaspoon.
- Humidity affects volume: Flour absorbs moisture, becoming denser. The same cup of flour can weigh 120g or 145g depending on humidity.
- Small amounts amplify errors: In baking, even 1 gram of baking powder too much can change the result. A teaspoon measurement is rarely that precise.
However, most home cooks in the US use teaspoons — so this converter bridges the gap between metric recipes and American measuring spoons.
Reading Nutrition Labels in Teaspoons
Nutrition labels in the US list sugar, salt, and fat in grams — but Americans think in teaspoons. Quick conversions:
- 4 grams of sugar = ~1 teaspoon. A can of soda with 39g of sugar contains nearly 10 teaspoons!
- 6 grams of salt = ~1 teaspoon. The FDA recommends less than 2,300 mg (about ⅓ tsp) of sodium per day.
- 5 grams of fat = ~1 teaspoon (for oils with density ~0.91 g/mL).
