How to Convert Inches to Centimeters

There are exactly 2.54 centimeters in one inch. This is an exact conversion factor established by international agreement in 1959, when the international yard was defined as exactly 0.9144 meters.

The conversion formula is:

centimeters = inches × 2.54

For example: 12 inches = 12 × 2.54 = 30.48 cm (1 foot).
And: 5.5 inches = 5.5 × 2.54 = 13.97 cm.

To convert back from centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54: inches = cm ÷ 2.54. For example, 10 cm = 10 ÷ 2.54 = 3.937 inches.

Visualizing lengths is easier when you compare to everyday objects:

  • 1 inch (2.54 cm) — Width of a US quarter dollar coin (24.26 mm ≈ 0.955″)
  • 6 inches (15.24 cm) — Standard dollar bill width (6.14″)
  • 12 inches (30.48 cm) — Standard ruler length (1 foot)
  • 14 inches (35.56 cm) — Common laptop screen diagonal
  • 27 inches (68.58 cm) — Common desktop monitor diagonal
  • 55 inches (139.7 cm) — Popular TV screen size

What Is an Inch?

An inch (abbreviation: in or ) is a unit of length in the US customary and Imperial systems. One inch is defined as exactly 1/12 of a foot, or 1/36 of a yard. Since the international yard equals exactly 0.9144 meters, one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters — by definition, not approximation.

The inch has been used in various forms since at least the 7th century. The modern standardized inch was established in 1959 when the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa agreed on the international yard.

What Is a Centimeter?

A centimeter (abbreviation: cm) is a metric unit of length equal to one hundredth of a meter (1/100 m), or 10 millimeters. The prefix "centi-" means one hundredth. Centimeters are part of the International System of Units (SI) and are widely used worldwide for everyday measurements.

A standard No. 2 pencil is about 1 cm in diameter, giving a quick real-world reference for the unit.

When to Convert Inches to Centimeters

  • International shipping: Package dimensions must often be in centimeters for international carriers. A 12″ × 8″ × 6″ box is 30.48 × 20.32 × 15.24 cm.
  • Screen sizes: Monitors, TVs, and phones are advertised in inches in the US but in cm in most other countries. A 27-inch monitor = 68.58 cm diagonal.
  • Height conversion: Converting US height (e.g., 5′ 10″ = 70″) to metric (177.8 cm) for medical records, passports, or international forms.
  • DIY and construction: Converting plans between imperial and metric, especially when ordering materials manufactured in metric countries.
  • Academic and scientific work: All scientific measurements use the metric system. Converting lab measurements from US tools (in inches) to cm/mm for publication.
