Note: Japanese km/L ratings (JC08/WLTC cycle) tend to be more optimistic than US EPA ratings. Real-world US MPG may be 15–25% lower than the converted Japanese rating.
Why km/L Is Easier for Americans
Unlike L/100km (which inverts the scale — lower = better), km/L works the same way as MPG: higher = better. Both measure how far you travel per unit of fuel. The only difference is the units: kilometers instead of miles, liters instead of gallons. This makes km/L more intuitive for Americans to understand than L/100km.
What Is km/L?
Kilometers per liter (km/L) measures fuel efficiency — how many kilometers a vehicle can travel on one liter of fuel. Higher = better. It's used primarily in Japan, India, South Korea, Brazil, and Thailand. To convert to L/100km: L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L.
What Is Miles per Gallon (MPG)?
Miles per gallon (MPG) measures how far a vehicle travels on one US gallon (3.785 liters). Higher = better. The US EPA rates every new car in MPG. Both km/L and MPG measure the same concept (distance per fuel unit), making the conversion a simple multiplication.
