๐Ÿ’ก How to Convert HP to Amps

The HP to amps conversion is essential for selecting the right wire size, breaker, and starter for electric motors.

Formula

I = (HP ร— 746) / (V ร— Eff ร— PF)

Example: 5 HP motor at 240V, PF=0.85, Eff=90%:
I = (5 ร— 746) / (240 ร— 0.9 ร— 0.85) = 20.3 amps

NEC Motor Full Load Amps (FLA) Reference

The NEC provides full-load amp tables (Tables 430.247-430.250) for standard motor ratings. These are used for wire and breaker sizing, not the nameplate amps.

5 HP at 240V (PF=0.85, Eff=90%) = 20.3 amps. Always use NEC FLA tables for wire/breaker sizing.
