Grout
Definition
Grout is a dense fluid or paste used to fill gaps between tiles, lock tiles in place, and prevent moisture infiltration. Types include sanded grout (for joints wider than 1/8", contains fine sand for strength), unsanded grout (for joints 1/8" or narrower, smoother finish), and epoxy grout (waterproof, stain-resistant, used in wet areas and commercial applications). Standard grout coverage varies by tile size and joint width โ 25 lbs of sanded grout covers roughly 70โ95 sq ft for 12ร12 tiles with 1/8" joints. Grout should be sealed after installation to prevent staining.
Why is Grout Important?
For homeowners, contractors, and DIY builders across the United States, understanding Grout is essential to accurate material estimation and cost planning. Whether you are pouring a concrete driveway, framing a deck, or calculating roofing materials, mastering this concept helps prevent costly over-ordering or project delays from material shortages.
Our free construction calculators leverage this concept to provide instant, accurate estimates โ saving hours of manual measurement and arithmetic while ensuring your project stays on budget.
What is Grout?
Grout is a dense paste used to fill the joints between tiles, locking them in place, preventing moisture infiltration, and providing a finished appearance. Grout is essential for every tile installation โ floors, walls, showers, backsplashes, and countertops. Choosing the right grout type and properly maintaining it determines both the longevity and appearance of your tile work.
Types of Grout
| Type | Joint Width | Best For | Cost/25 lbs | Pros |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sanded | โ " โ ยฝ" | Floors, most wall tile | $12โ$20 | Strong, resists cracking, less shrinkage |
| Unsanded | Up to โ " | Wall tile, glass tile, polished stone | $12โ$20 | Smooth finish, won't scratch delicate tile |
| Epoxy | โ " โ ยฝ" | Showers, pools, commercial kitchens | $40โ$80 | Waterproof, stain-proof, no sealing needed |
| Furan | ยผ" โ ยฝ" | Industrial, chemical-resistant areas | $60โ$100+ | Extreme chemical resistance |
| Premixed (acrylic) | Up to โ " | Small DIY projects, backsplashes | $15โ$25/qt | No mixing required, ready to use |

Grout Maintenance
- Seal cement grout within 48โ72 hours of installation and re-seal annually. Epoxy grout never needs sealing
- Clean regularly with pH-neutral cleaner โ avoid bleach, vinegar, and acidic cleaners on cement grout (they erode it)
- Re-grout when needed โ cracked, crumbling, or mold-stained grout should be removed and replaced. Use a grout saw or oscillating tool to remove old grout to โ depth before applying new
- Caulk transition joints โ where tile meets tub, shower floor meets walls, or different surfaces meet, use caulk instead of grout (these joints need flexibility)
