Stud Spacing
Definition
Stud spacing is the center-to-center distance between vertical framing members (studs) in a wall. The two standard spacings in US residential construction are 16 inches on center (16" OC) and 24 inches on center (24" OC). Most load-bearing walls and exterior walls use 16" OC for greater structural capacity. Interior non-load-bearing partition walls may use 24" OC to reduce material costs. Stud spacing determines how many studs are needed per wall length: for 16" OC, multiply wall length in feet by 0.75 and add 1; for 24" OC, multiply by 0.5 and add 1.

How to Calculate Studs Needed
Formula:
- 16" OC: Studs = (Wall length in feet ร 0.75) + 1
- 24" OC: Studs = (Wall length in feet ร 0.5) + 1
Then add: 2 studs per corner, 2 extra studs per door/window header, and 1 king stud + 1 jack stud per side of each opening.
