π‘ What Is Adjusted Body Weight?
Adjusted Body Weight (ABW) = IBW + factor Γ (Actual Weight β IBW). The standard adjustment factor is 0.4, meaning 40% of excess weight is metabolically active. Ideal Body Weight (IBW) uses the Devine formula.
ABW is used when a patient exceeds their IBW by more than 30%. It provides a more accurate weight for calculating drug doses (antibiotics, chemotherapy), calorie needs (TPN), and creatinine clearance.
100 kg patient, 170 cm male: IBW = 66.5 kg, ABW = 66.5 + 0.4 Γ (100 β 66.5) = 79.9 kg.
